Chong Wei's Absence Won't Dampen Spirit Of Malaysian Contingent To Glasgow - CDM

KUALA LUMPUR, July 9 (Bernama) -- The absence of world number one shuttler Datuk Lee Chong Wei at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland will not weaken the Malaysian contingent said Chef-De-Mission Datuk Ong Poh Eng.

Ong said he was confident that the Malaysian contingent would be able to put up a commendable performance even without Chong Wei who has been a regular contributor of gold medals in the Commonwealth Games.

"We will announce our gold-medal target for the Commonwealth Games during the flag handing ceremony tomorrow...we will do our best but may not match the medal haul at the New Delhi Commonwealth Games in 2010.

"It is not that we are not good but we have to be realistic in setting targets," he said after receiving sponsorship from Bata at Wisma Majlis Olimpik Malaysia (OCM), here today.

Bata who have been the official shoe sponsor to OCM for 20 years, handed over exclusively designed Power shoes for athletes who will compete in the Commonwealth and Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea.

In 2010, Malaysia won 12 gold medals in New Delhi.
