RUGBY: Perfect build-up for Glasgow

AFTER a disappointing outing at the Power International Negri Sembilan Royal Sevens a fortnight ago, the national team got their Glasgow Commonwealth Games preparations back on track with a winning performance at the second leg of the Singapore Rugby Union Domestic Club Sevens over the weekend.

The team defeated Singapore Cricket Club Blacks 26-12 in the decider after downing Singapore Wanderers 34-5 in the semi-finals. They notched wins over Bedok Kings (33-5) and Saints RFC (29-5) in the preliminaries.

Team manager Fahmy Jalil said he was happy with the improvement shown by his players in what is their last tournament before the Commonwealth action starts at the Ibrox Stadium on July 26.
“We had a problem with complacency at the Royal Sevens and we paid the price for it as we lost games that we had already led comfortably,” said Fahmy.

“The focus has been on improving our mental focus over the past two weeks and I am glad the boys have shown a lot of improvement in terms of concentration here.

“We also won one leg of the series last year but we did it without any (naturalised) Fijians this time. It is a good morale booster for us before we go to Scotland.”

The team had finished fourth at the Royal Sevens, losing to Cobra in the semi-finals and Taiwan in the playoffs.

Fahmy, who is expected to announce the final 12-man squad later this week, said the team will play friendlies with Kenya and Cook Island before the start of the games. The squad will leave for Glasgow on July 22.
