Poh Eng expecting no less than seven gold

COMMONWEALTH Games chef-de-mission Datuk Ong Poh Eng is expecting Malaysian athletes to deliver no less than seven gold medals in Glasgow on July 23-Aug 3.

Poh Eng said it would be tough to replicate the 12-gold haul achieved in Delhi four years ago but is nevertheless hoping the younger athletes will rise to the occasion.

“Obviously we want to win as many medals as we can but we also have to look at the current situation as well,” said Poh Eng, when met at Bata Malaysia’s official shoe presentation for the contingent at the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

“I believe we will definitely win at least seven and equal or better our performance in Manchester (2002) and Melbourne (2006).

“To win 12 or more at the moment looks difficult. We do not want to place unnecessary pressure on the athletes or be overconfident.

“It is disappointing that Lee Chong Wei is out as we had expected him to deliver one gold but he is injured and we cannot afford to risk him.

“However, we should not dwell on the negatives. In sports anything can happen and we should never give up.”

Bata Malaysia has produced over 1,000 pairs of special issue shoes for the national athletes competing in the Commonwealth and Asian Games.
