OCM responsible for multi-sport targets

Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin is alarmed that certain national sports associations (NSAs) are not taking the Commonwealth Games seriously in fielding teams just to make up the numbers. But he will only deal with them after the Games.

This, he said would not be taken lightly, but tackling the matter now would only serve to undermine the athletes preparing for the Games.

“I’m aware of it, but we will get to it after the Games. I don’t want to undermine the athletes’ preparations for the Games right now,” said Khairy yesterday.

He said the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) has been given the duty of announcing the official target for the national contingent at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on July 23-Aug 3.
Khairy said the ministry and National Sports Council (NSC) have agreed to this move, and the national contingent should be able to meet it.

“I’ve decided that from now on, the OCM will issue the target and that will be the target for us all. The practice of the minister announcing the target, I think is a bit outdated.

“The target has been discussed by the OCM and the NSC and we’ve all agreed to it, so the OCM should announce it. I want to start a new practice because the minister wouldn’t know,” said Khairy.
He said this will be the practice for future Games as well, since national contingents for multi-sport events are all administered by the OCM.

“I think it is only fair that the OCM be handed the responsibility. For multi-sport events like the Sea Games, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games, the OCM is the official body that coordinates our contingent,” said Khairy after hosting a breaking of fast buffet for members of the Sportswriters Association (SAM) in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

He revealed yesterday that cyclist Fatehah Mustapa will be the replacement for injured badminton player Lee Chong Wei as the contingent’s flag-bearer at the opening ceremony.
Chong Wei has pulled out of the Games to undergo surgery for a thigh injury.
