KUALA LUMPUR: The National Sports Council (NSC)
have downplayed the need for an official gold medal target for the
national contingent at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games from July 23-Aug
3.
NSC director-general Datuk Seri Zolkples Embong said yesterday he was more concerned with the conditions of the Games-bound athletes than projecting a gold-medal target.
“Shuttler (Lee) Chong Wei is the best example. He’s our gold medal prospect but now he won’t be able to compete because of a thigh injury.
“His absence could affect our overall gold count. That’s why we don’t see the point in setting up an early target.
“There’s no need to rush. It’s better for us to monitor the
development and conditions of our athletes to make sure they are
physically and mentally prepared for the Games,” said Zolkples.
At the last Games in New Delhi in 2010, the NSC set a 10-gold target but the team returned with 12 golds, 10 silvers and 13 bronzes to finish seventh in the overall medal tally. It was Malaysia’s best-ever performance, surpassing the 10-14-12 haul at the 1998 Kuala Lumpur Games.
