KUALA LUMPUR: Woman cyclist Fatehah Mustapa has
been picked as the Malaysian flag bearer for the Glasgow Commonwealth
Games from July 23-Aug 3, replacing shuttler Lee Chong Wei who was
forced to withdraw after coming down with a thigh injury.
Fatehah is the third cyclist to be given the honour, following in the footsteps of Azizulhasni Awang (2008 Beijing Olympics) and Josiah Ng (2006 Doha Asian Games).
“I am surprised. It is a rare honour and I am happy. It only makes me more determined to win a medal for myself and the country,” said the 25-year-old Fatehah, who became the first Malaysian woman cyclist to win a World Cup medal – a keirin silver – in the final leg in Aguascalientes, Mexico, in January this year.
“I will be the first Malaysian woman cyclist to compete in the track event at the Commonwealth Games. This is my first appearance and I really hope to win a medal, especially in the 500m time trial or the keirin,” added Fatehah, who clocked a personal best of 34.898 to win the bronze in the 500m time trial at the Asian Cycling Championships in Kazakhstan last month.
Besides the 500m time trial and keirin, Fatehah will also compete in the sprint in Glasgow.
