GLASGOW: All is not lost yet for rifle shooter Nur Ayuni Farhana Abdul Halim.
She may still get a shot at retaining the gold medal in the Commonwealth Games – provided the team officials can relocate her missing jacket and Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin can work his magic.
Khairy said that they would appeal to the Games organisers to let her participate “although the registration for the shooting competition ended on Monday”.
“It’s really unfortunate that her jacket did not arrive from London … although Ayuni and the national shooting team landed in Glasgow on July 17,” said Khairy.
“She’s devastated … we will try to locate her missing jacket. The
officials tried to get her a replacement but it didn’t fit her.
“We will appeal on her behalf if we can locate the jacket. If not, then it will definitely affect our prospects of winning gold medals in shooting,” added Khairy after the Malaysian flag raising ceremony at the Games Village on Tuesday.
Ayuni and Nur Suryani Taibi won the pairs gold in the women’s 10m air rifle in New Delhi four years ago.
But Ayuni has had to withdraw from the event in Glasgow because of the missing jacket.
It is learnt that the missing luggage, which contains the jacket, is in London.
Team manager Datuk Musa Omar had withdrawn Ayuni from the 50m rifle prone event and replaced her with Muslifah Zulkifli.
The shooting competition begins on Thursday at the Barry Buddon Shooting Range in Carnoustie.
