Last minute decision

PANDELELA Rinong is raring for action at the Commonwealth Games but coach Yang Zhuliang will only decide whether she should compete in more than one event at the team managers’ meeting in Edinburgh.

The Sarawak-born is not 100 per cent fit after spraining her left knee during training in Guangzhou two weeks ago.
Pandelela was initially registered for three events but has since withdrawn from the 3-metre springboard synchro.

However, Pandelela’s participation in the other two events — 10-platform individual and synchro — will only be decided by Zhuliang after his team arrive in Edinburgh. The diving event starts on July 30.

“I will assess her condition in training before deciding whether she should compete in the platform synchro. We will have several sessions in Edinburgh,” said Zhuliang.

“She should be able to defend her title in the platform individual. We have about five days to decide.”
Pandelela’s absence from the platform synchro will not affect Malaysia’s hopes of a medal in this event.

Last week, her replacement, Cheong Jun Hoong and veteran Leong Mun Yee paired up and won a silver medal at the World Cup in Shanghai.
Zhuliang indicated that he was not too concerned about Pandelela’s absence from the platform synchro event as he has enough options.

“Pandelela and Mun Yee have won main medals together but we have others. Jun Hoong is an able replacement,” said the China-born coach.

However, Zhuliang admitted that Pandelela’s injury is more serious than first thought.
“I would be lying if I tell you that we are not concerned about her condition.

“We withdrew her from the springboard synchro because whenever she bounced off the board, she felt pain in her left knee.”

The team leave for Edinburgh tomorrow.
