Shooting A Gold Medal Prospect At Commonwealth Games

KUALA LUMPUR, June 27 (Bernama) - Malaysia's chef-de-mission Datuk Ong Poh Eng is confident of shooting's prospect at Glasgow Commonwealth Games next month.

"We have a good record in shooting. I believe the shooters have a chance of winning medals for the country," he told reporters after observing preparation of the shooting and gymnastics squads at Bukit Jalil, here today.

Ong said the gold medal target would be announced soon.

The shooting squad won two gold medals at the New Delhi Commonwealth games four years ago.

They were won by Nur Suryani Mohamed Taibi and Nur Ayuni Farhana Abd Halim (10m air pistol/team) and Bibiana Ng (10m air pistol/individual).

A total of 179 athletes from 16 sports and 90 officials will participate in the prestigious event.

Meanwhile, Nur Suryani said she expect a tougher challenge in Glasgow due to several changes to the regulations for shooting.

"This time, the audience and supporters can make noise when the athletes are in action. This will definitely disturb our concentration."

"I expect stiff competition from the Indian shooters. As an athlete, it is my responsibility to give my best," he added.

As final preparation, the Malaysian shooters will participate in ISSF World Cup in China from July 1 to 10.
