PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Gymnastics Federation (MGF) are placing their hopes on the rhythmic gymnasts to deliver the goods at next month’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Amy Kwan Dict Weng, Wong Poh San and Fatin Zakirah Jalany Zain Jalany are the rhythmic gymnasts picked for the Games from July 23-Aug 3.

Said MGF honorary secretary N. Shanmugarajah: “Our best bet to win a medal will be in the rhythmic competition. Hopefully, the girls will do us proud.

“The preparations are well under way. The girls have been competing overseas, the most recent being in Tashkent (Uzbekistan) last month.”

In the last Games in New Delhi in 2010, rhythmic gymnast Elaine Koon contributed five medals – one gold, one silver and three bronzes – in the individual competition.

At the 2006 edition in Melbourne, Malaysia bagged the silver in the team event. Durratun Nashihin Rosli was the star performer with three individual silvers while Lim Wen Chean won two individual bronzes.

On the artistic competition, Shanmugarajah believes the women’s team may spring a surprise.
The MGF are banking on Tracie Ang to recover from her injuries and start training again. She suffered a back injury last month.

Farah Ann Abdul Hadi, Tan Ing Yueh and Britain-based gymnast Natasha Raymund Jayadev Devaraj are the other gymnasts in the team.

“Tracie is a good bet for a medal if she is back at her best. She’s still undergoing physiotherapy treatment. She should be able to start training by the middle of this month,” said Shanmugarah.
