National Sailing Squad Qualify For Commonweath, Asian Games

SEPANG, Feb 22 (Bernama) -- The national sailing squad has qualified for this year's Commonwealth and Asian games following its members outstanding performance in the just concluded Qatar International Reggata in Doha.

Team manager Abdul Halim Hassan said the national sailors would undergo a selection process as participation at the two Games was limited to just one sailor per country for each sailing event.

He told this to Bernama after the team arrived from Doha at the KL International Airport here Monday.

At the Doha meet, Malaysia made a clean sweep in the optimist category and were runners-up in the Laser 4.7 and Laser Standard.

The meet, from Feb 16-20, was participated by some 200 sailors from 28 countries including Belgium, Bahrain, Oman, Tunisia, Australia, New Zealand, Norway, Pakistan, India, Iran, Malaysia and hosts Qatar.

The Commonwealth Games will be held in New Delhi from Oct 3-14 while the Asian Games in Guangzhou, China from Nov 13-21.
